Mazzancolla

Scientific name: Penaeus kerathurus

The mazzancolla, better known as " gambero imperiale" is a common crustacean in the Mediterranean Sea and particularly widespread in the Adriatic. Very popular at the fish market due to its size and the taste of its meat.

Characteristics

It has the characteristic shape of a crayfish in two main parts: the head, where most of the internal organs and on which long antennae are found and the abdomen, which has the musculature necessary for movement. The colour varies in relation to the seabed and the depth of the water but generally it is clear with shades that tend to orange pink or gray with brown-reddish bands. Its weight often exceeds 100 grams and 20 centimeters in length.

Habitat

It lives in coastal waters from 5-50m deep, on sandy and muddy bottoms. It is nocturnal and remains hidden in the sand during the day. The young are easily found in brackish waters such as estuaries or lagoons where food is very abundant, whereas the adult lives in a marine habitat. Fishing takes place in autumn and spring through the use of trawl nets.
